What Is a Collimating Lens? – Understanding the Core of Modern Optical Systems


A collimating lens is an optical lens designed to transform divergent light—typically from a laser diode, LED, or fiber—into a parallel (collimated) beam. 

By reducing divergence, the lens ensures the beam maintains consistent direction, intensity, and quality over long distances. 

This makes collimating lenses indispensable in applications such as laser modules, medical devices, barcode scanners, measurement systems, and machine vision.

Collimating lenses are engineered in various shapes—including aspheric, plano-convex, and molded glass designs—to optimize beam uniformity and minimize optical aberrations. 

High-precision versions can achieve extremely low divergence angles, making them suitable for demanding scientific and industrial environments.
